In order to ensure any pain is eliminated or minimized during a dental procedure, sedation dentistry is a branch designed to provide you with the proper medical care. It can be used to ensure a patient is relaxed and calm during oral health care procedures, and in some instances, can even put patients to sleep. A few common forms of sedation that exist are as follows:

– Gas sedation, typically in the form of laughing gas, is administered to an individual to help calm and relax them before any oral health procedures are given. The sedation is fast-acting and will wear off almost immediately after the gas is removed.

– Oral sedation, also known as pill sedation, is given directly by swallowing and ingesting a pill. Usually, the pills take about an hour to fully take effect before any oral health care procedures can be given.

– For the fastest acting form of sedation, intravenous moderate sedation, also known as IV sedation, can be applied. Through the use of IV sedation, drugs are injected directly into your bloodstream. This effect is almost instantaneous and can be adjusted for the desired level of dosage.
